That way, we are sure to cover 100% of the bandwidth usage by users of WowMatrix, instead of figures suggested by either party (them or us). On a side note, with regard to proposal (a), we would have preferred that we host the AddOns on our own servers. It is clear that both Curse and WoWInterface are more concerned about their own profits than working with us to help better serve the gaming community. It was an insult to ourselves and to our users. Instead of taking the time to negotiate on our proposal, they were trying very hard to negotiate on the price of the buyout instead. WoWInterface completely ignored the proposal, while Curse rejected the proposal on the spot, while making threats and trying to buy us out for cheap instead, so as to get rid of us completely. Our proposals included all 3 of the following:Ī) Making regular financial contributions to cover bandwidth usage by our updater.ī) Technical implementations to reduce such bandwidth usage by third party updaters such as WowMatrix.Ĭ) Additional exposure within our software to drive more traffic to their sites, thereby increasing their revenue and user base. We are probably still the only AddOn updater to have done this. In fact, we were the ones who approached both Curse and WoWInterface with beneficial proposals many months ago. So, that is why we did not host AddOns on our servers from the very beginning (which we would have been happy to do in the first place!).ĭid Curse and WoWInterface try to negotiate with you guys to resolve the bandwidth issue before blocking WowMatrix from their sites? This, coupled with the fact that at the time, WowAce provided an RSS feed containing direct download links to the AddOns, made it clear to us that they would very much prefer that our updater download directly from their servers, and not from our own (which is the exact opposite of what they would like now). Later on, when we launched WowMatrix (the cross-site updater application), we made a post at WowAce's 'Updater' forum (note: WowAce which was subsequently acquired by Curse), and when we kindly suggested the possibility of hosting their AddOns on our servers to help with the bandwidth, the WowAce administrator promptly rejected the idea publicly. If we were to host our own AddOns from the start, then that would simply add to this problem, not solve it.Īlso, when we first launched our website (before we started working on the cross-site updater application), it was just another fan site containing a list of some nice AddOns that we thought users would like.Īnd just like many fan sites, such as the one mentioned above, we did host a number of AddOns on our servers, with the kind intention of helping offset bandwidth costs. This is because there has never been, and likely never will be, a single site that hosts every single AddOn, which causes users to have to monitor multiple sites or use multiple software updaters. One of the main goals of WowMatrix, like any other cross-site updater, has always been to fill a very important need in this community, which is to allow users to safely and easily install and update all of their AddOns, regardless of the site at which they may be hosted, at no charge. Why did WowMatrix connect to their sites instead of hosting AddOns on your own servers in the first place? We are now hosting AddOns on our own servers, such as the ones as requested by authors, as well as the ones that come with free distribution licenses. The main reason they have provided for taking this action is that users of WowMatrix were utilizing their bandwidth when downloading AddOns, which was costing them resources.Īlthough we do not agree with their actions, we respect their position in this matter, and so WowMatrix does not currently download AddOns from either Curse or WoWInterface. On the day of patch 3.1, when users needed to update many of their AddOns, Curse and WoWInterface deliberately started blocking AddOn updaters (such as WowMatrix) from connecting to their sites.
